This small-group workshop is designed to empower individuals with vestibular migraine disorder to take control of their condition and thrive. Over eight weeks, you’ll gain the tools, knowledge, and confidence to live successfully with vestibular migraines. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed or have been navigating this journey for years, this workshop is for you.

What to Expect

The workshop consists of 8 interactive sessions, each focusing on a critical aspect of understanding and managing vestibular migraines.

Understanding Migraines: In this foundational session, you’ll dive into the science behind migraines. Learn why migraines occur, what distinguishes vestibular migraines from other vestibular disorders, and the neurological processes involved. This session provides clarity on your condition, helping you understand why certain strategies work and empowering you to make informed decisions.

Vestibular Migraine Symptoms and Off-Switches: Discover the full spectrum of vestibular migraine symptoms, from dizziness and vertigo to brain fog and sensory sensitivities. Learn how to identify the onset of symptoms early and explore techniques and tools to interrupt them, including relaxation methods, grounding exercises, and lifestyle adjustments.

Migraine Triggers: Not all triggers are universal. This session will help you identify your personal migraine triggers, whether they’re dietary, environmental, or emotional. You’ll also learn strategies to reduce exposure to these triggers and how to handle unavoidable ones.

Lifestyle Modifications: Explore actionable lifestyle changes that can make a lasting difference in managing your condition. Topics include optimizing your diet for migraine prevention, improving sleep hygiene, establishing stress-reduction routines, and creating an environment that supports vestibular health.

Pharmacological, Supplements, Devices and Alternative Therapies: Learn about the range of treatments available, including medications commonly used for vestibular migraines, evidence-based supplements, neuromodulation devices, and alternative therapies. Also learn about migraine rescue kits and how to create one to be used during a migraine attack. This session provides an overview of options to help you work with your healthcare provider to find what’s right for you.

Vestibular Physiotherapy: Vestibular physiotherapy can play a significant role in reducing dizziness, improving balance, and retraining your vestibular system. This session will cover what to expect from vestibular therapy (hint - its not VOR X1!), exercises you can do at home, and how to find a qualified therapist.

Increasing our Threshold: Managing a chronic condition requires careful energy allocation. This session will introduce the Spoon Theory as a framework for understanding energy limits. You’ll learn practical techniques for pacing yourself, setting boundaries, planning your day, nervous system regulation, energy restoration and avoiding burnout while maintaining a fulfilling life.

Tying It All Together: In the final session, you’ll integrate everything you’ve learned into a cohesive plan. Topics include navigating relationships and communicating your needs, managing work-life balance, driving safety and adaptations, travelling, resources & support and cultivating a mindset of resilience and self-compassion. By the end, you’ll have a comprehensive strategy for living successfully with vestibular migraines.

How Do I Know if I have Vestibular Migraine?

The diagnostic criteria for vestibular migraine are defined by the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3), developed by the International Headache Society. Here is an outline:

A) At least 5 episodes of vestibular symptoms of moderate or severe intensity, lasting 5 minutes to 72 hours

B) Current or previous history of migraine with or without aura according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD)

C) One of more migraine features with at least 50% of the vestibular episodes

  • Headaches with at least two of the following characteristics: unilateral, pulsating/throbbing, moderate or severe intensity, aggravated by routing physical activity

  • Photophobia and phonophobia

  • Visual aura

D) Not better accounted for by another vestibular or ICHD diagnosis
